Helaine Olen’s bestseller “Pound Foolish: Exposing the Dark Side of the Personal Finance Industry” has a thing or two to say about shady dealings in the personal finance industry. One thing she’s clear about is how hard it is for average Americans to make smart choices about money, particularly for those living on low to no incomes. “I urge you to check out an online game called Spent, a role-playing game where gamers are asked to make decisions as though they are holding a minimum wage job. The goal: make it to the next pay cycle without going into debt. I’ve played Spent a dozen times, and I’ve never, ever made it to the end of the month.”
