Four Questions for the Brandcenter’s Vann Graves
In this Q&A, Vann Graves, VCU Brandcenter’s new executive director, shares some insight on what guests can expect from his “Let’s End Diversity Theater: It’s Time to Get Real” discussion for the One Club–Carolinas inaugural event taking place at McKinney on Thursday, August 1.
Your discussion topic for the One Club–Carolinas event will be “Let’s End Diversity Theater: It’s Time to Get Real.” What can people expect to hear from you?
My hope is to give a clear and honest assessment of my personal beliefs through my experiences. I’ll also provide my thoughts on how we can improve some of the things we’ve done in the industry.
What is it about your background and experience that makes this topic so important to you?
It’s important to me because I’ve personally experienced hurdles and barriers to success — some intentional, but many unintentional.
What do you hope your discussion will inspire in your audience?
Quite frankly, I’d like to inspire them to do something, to make a change, to care.
Is there anything else we should know or be thinking about before the event on August 1?
I hope the talk will be interesting, a learning experience, but also fun. Although the topic is important and heavy, first and foremost, it’s a discussion about people. As such, it shouldn’t be something that we are afraid of; it should be something that we enjoy and have a good time going through together.
