Durham, NC named “haven for tolerance”

The Daily Beast, the online home of Newsweek Magazine, has ranked Durham, North Carolina, the No. 1 most tolerant city in America. Calling them havens for tolerance, all of the ranked cities have a population greater than 250,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The report took into account the following:

The number of reported hate crimes per 100,000 residents in 2010
Statewide statistics on the scope of anti-discrimination laws and attitudes regarding same-sex marriage
And the diversity of the urban population in terms of race
