Wall Street Journal reports on SPENT
Famed Dow Jones/Wall Street Journal Columnist Al Lewis talked to one of SPENT’s creators, Jenny Nicholson about popular misconceptions about poverty.
Borrowing from her personal life experience, Nicholson told Lewis that people who’ve never lived it don’t really think poverty in this country is for real. “We have two countries that exist side by side,” Nicholson said. “Even having grown up in poverty, it feels really far away. And if it feels far away to me, and I lived it for 17 years, it must be completely unimaginable for somebody who has never lived it.”
Nicholson and co-creator Nick Jones developed the online game SPENT to help people understand what it’s like to live on the edge of poverty and homelessness. So far, it’s been played more than a million times by people in 196 countries. And McKinney is challenging every member of Congress to play it, too.
