In 2011, McKinney and Urban Ministries of Durham launched an online game challenging players to survive for one month on $500 and proving — to more than 2 million players around the world — how quickly homelessness can happen, regardless of the choices you make. And folks are still talking about it.
Earlier this week, TED blogger Kate Torgovnick covered Jane McGonigal’s TEDGlobal 2012 talk about the healing effects of playing online games, and she included a list of games “created for a specific social good.” SPENT made the list with eight others, including this year’s Games for Change Award-winner WAY in which “two anonymous players — culled from different locations around the globe — must learn how to speak to each other.”
