For the second year in a row, John Newall spoke at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School to students in the weekend MBA program.
Last year, John spoke about the value of a brand, as well as how to create and then manage one. On July 28, 2012, he shifted gears and presented “A New Age Take on Creativity,” explaining how the creative process works and how anyone can become more creative.
“The first step in creativity is awareness,” explains John. “You must be present to your own story and memes that tell you that you think you have the absolute truth about something.” This means thinking different (and differently), a practice McKinney follows to “bust through categorical memes to create groundbreaking solutions.” John showed examples of McKinney work that did just that, including The World’s First Television for Men and Women for Sony and Let’s Have Text for Virgin Mobile.
Though a decidedly non-MBA topic and approach, John reports that his talk was well received. The weekend MBA program attracts men and women with full-time careers by offering classes on Fridays and Saturdays only. Perhaps John’s message of creativity potential was just what they needed to hear.
